Šingirejs was born in Brocēni to a Belarusian father and a Latvian mother. He attended Saldus mākslas skola with a focus on piano. He had his first performance as an artist at the age of 16. He later described this first performance at his school as the initial spark for his artistic career. He taught himself singing and guitar through self-study.

Dons first gained notoriety in Latvia by winning the reality show Talantu Fabrika in 2003. As a prize, he received a job as a radio presenter on the Radio SWH Rock station. He later described this work as far more stressful than any stage appearance. A year later he released his first album together with another participant in the reality show. The album was a huge success in Latvia and earned him nominations for the Latvian Music Prize, among others. In 2006, Dons released his first solo album, which was promptly nominated again in various categories at the Latvian Music Prize.

In 2007 Dons moved to Los Angeles. During this time he performed under various stage names, such as Art Green or Art Singer.

In 2008 Dons released his first Latvian-language album. In 2010 he took part in the Latvian preliminary round for the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time. He took second place behind Aisha. In 2014 he tried to win the Latvian preliminary round again and took second place again, this time behind the band Aarzemnieki.

In the same year he won Album of the Year for his album Varanasi and Song of the Year for his song “Tev Piedzims Bērns”  at the Latvian Music Awards.

In 2015 and 2017, Dons sat on the jury for the Latvian preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest.

In January 2024, Dons released a song in English for the first time since 2013, the song Hollow. With this he took part in the Supernova 2024, the Latvian preliminary round. On February 10, he won the final by more than 32,000 votes over second place.
