This year marks Moldova’s 20th appearance in the ESC in Malmö, so congratulations on this milestone anniversary! The enthusiasm for the contest in Moldova is palpable and continues to grow with each passing year. Moldova’s broadcaster, TRM, consistently organizes a national final to select its entry for Eurovision. Last year, Pasha Parfeny, a familiar face in the ESC world, represented Moldova and secured an 18th place finish.

Zdob și Zdub certainly left a lasting impression on Moldova’s Eurovision journey. However, it’s essential to highlight the country’s most significant achievement so far, which is a third place. This remarkable feat was accomplished by SunStroke Project and Olia Tira in 2010 with their infectious saxophone-infused track “Run Away.” Sunstroke Project’s took part for the second time and made the third place finish in 2017 was the best result for Moldova in the Eurovision Song Contest. Moldova has successfully advanced to the Grand Final 13 times out of 20 participations, boasting a commendable success rate of 65%.

Moldova has frequently infused folkloric elements into their Eurovision entries, which have garnered appreciation from neighbouring countries like Romania and Ukraine. However, it’s crucial to acknowledge the recent changes in the Eurovision voting system, which now include both a professional jury and televote from each participating country. This shift signifies that Moldova’s success isn’t solely dependent on the votes of neighbouring nations but also on the overall quality and appeal of their song and performance. While Moldova boasts a historical Grand Final qualification rate of around 65%, this outcome hinges on various factors including the competitiveness of the field in a given year and how well their entry resonates with both the jury and the public.
