Biography of Tautumeitas

The Eurovision Song Contest is known for its musical diversity, showcasing a wide range of genres every year. This year, the competition welcomes a unique Latvian ethno-folk group, Tautumeitas (translated as Folk Girls). They won Latvia’s national selection, Supernova, with their song “Bur Man Laimi” (Bring Me Luck), proving that traditional folk music still holds a special place in Eurovision.

Tautumeitas is composed of six talented musicians: Asnate Rancāne (vocals, violin), Aurēlija Rancāne (vocals, drums), Laura Līcīte (vocals, violin), Gabriēla Zvaigznīte (vocals), Annemarija Moiseja (vocals, melodica, percussion), and Kate Slišāne (vocals, mandolin, clarinet). Founded in 2015, the group celebrates the Latvian Dainas tradition: short, four-line poems that have been passed down orally for centuries. Over 1.2 million of these poetic verses have been documented, earning recognition as part of UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage.

Their music seamlessly blends the ancient with the modern, transforming Latvia’s rich folk heritage into a mesmerizing and contemporary listening experience. In their music videos and performances, Tautumeitas are often seen wearing traditional Latvian attire, enhanced by mystical choreography and a fusion of old and new instrumentation, creating an enchanting visual and auditory spectacle.

If you've ever visited the Baltic countries and experienced their traditional singing, the style of Bur Man Laimi will feel instantly familiar. The rich choral harmonies, sung in different vocal ranges, are deeply rooted in the region's culture and are often celebrated at music festivals and special occasions like weddings.

Lyrically, the song conveys a message of resilience and positivity, even in the face of witches and evil spirits working against the protagonist. Musically, it features an intriguing melody with a fast-paced rhythm, while the ethereal vocals create an atmosphere of effortless grace, making it an easy-listening yet captivating track.

Its presentation even draws comparisons to the 2002 Eurovision interval act in Tallinn, incorporating a similar mystical and folkloric aesthetic. “Bur Man Laimi” has undoubtedly earned its place in the Grand Final in Basel, though its distinct style may not appeal to everyone when it comes to claiming victory.
