Biography of VÆB

The sibling duo VÆB could very well win Iceland’s national final, Söngvakeppnin, with their song “RÓA”. The brothers already made a strong impression last year, finishing fourth with “BÍÓMYND” . Even then, it was evident already, they were destined to represent Iceland at the Eurovision Song Contest someday.

Hálfdán Helgi and Matthías Davíð Matthíasson come from a musically gifted family. Their father, Matthías, is an organist, saxophone teacher, and choir director, while their mother, Áslaug, is a singer and vocal coach. Growing up surrounded by music, both brothers picked up instruments at a young age, Hálfdán gravitated towards drums, while Matthías took up the trumpet. They have been singing together since childhood, and in 2015, a 12-year-old Hálfdán won the popular Icelandic TV singing competition ‘The Christmas Star.’

In 2022, the brothers officially formed VÆB after a comedic song they posted on TikTok went viral. Encouraged by the overwhelming response, they released the track on streaming platforms and have been producing music ever since. That same year, they dropped their debut album, “Væb tékk”. Their first commercial breakthrough came with a remix of the track “Ofboðslega frægur” , marking the beginning of their rising success.

“RÓA”, which translates to “rowing” in English, paints a vivid metaphor for VÆB’s journey, one that feels like they’re setting off in a rowing boat toward new horizons. The lyrics are almost poetic, capturing a sense of adventure and longing. The brothers sing of sailing toward the Faroe Islands and Greenland, of not having seen the sun for months, and of a desire to stay in that moment forever. Despite the reflective and atmospheric storytelling, the song itself is a high-energy pop track, brimming with momentum and drive. VÆB may carry the playful charm of a young Jedward, but with an even more striking and polished presence. The song will be sung completely in Icelandic.
