The national final in Latvia is called “Supernova”. In the last two years the outcome was very successful, as there were one 6th and one 15th place in the Grand Finals for Latvia. The Latvian entries have become more modern and even more experimental, there was electro and some different music trials. This year a band called Triana Park, which would not fit into the typical Eurovision genre have made the race in Latvia.
The band consists of four members Agnese Rakovska (vocals), Artūrs Strautiņš (guitar), Edgard Viļums (drums) and Kristaps Ērglis (bass) and was founded in Riga the year 2008. The music style of Triana Park can be described as a mix of electro, punk, rock, hip hop and jazz. They have release two records and 8 singles. They always wanted to represent Latvia in the ESC: 2009 “Call Me Any Time You Need A Problem” , 2010 “Lullaby For My Dreammate (Diamond Lullaby)” and 2011 “Upside Down”.
The song “Line” was written but not with the intention to be a Eurovision entry. The song has been slightly revamped to please the Eurovision audience. There is a clear line of the chorus, a strong rhythm and a certain coolness in the song. The Latvian entries have become quite unusual and out of the ordinary. This entry shows the diversity which makes Eurovision to what it is. If the stage performance is almost like the video clip a good place in the Grand Final will be granted. The younger crowd will love this entry.
Top 10: 4
Chances for Top 10: 24 %
Chances for Final: 46 %
In the short history of Latvia in the Eurovision Song Contest, the biggest success came in the third year after the debut. In 2002 Marie N. could convince with sexy dance performance „I wanna“, this was also a little surprise. The following ESC 2003 took place in the wonderful capital of Latvia: Riga. Latvia describes itself as “the land that sings” which origins in the long singing tradition which takes place in singing festivals all over the country. This can also be said from the neighbour country Estonia.
From 2009 until 2014 Latvia could not reach the Grand final anymore, even if the Latvian songs seem to be contemporary, but a lovely young girl named Aminata could impress everybody with her self-composed song “Love Injected” and brought back a lot of Eurovision enthusiasm to Latvia. She made a wonderful 6th place. The year after Aminata acted as a composer and her entry “Heartbeat” which was sung by Justs came 15th in the Stockholm. The chances to reach a Top10 position is now at 24% for Latvia and the chance to reach the Grand Final is about 46%.

About me: My first Eurovision I watched was in 1987, Brussels. Since then I am following the ESC with great enthusiasm. The greatest fascination for me is the fact that the entire Europe is watching the show at that specific night. Since 2010, Oslo I am a member of the eurovisionlive.com team. I had the chance to witness the second German victory with Lena. My biggest wish would be to have the orchestra back, as it used to be until 1998.
