This breaking news has shocked the entire Eurovision world. Romania will not participate in this year’s ESC in Stockholm anymore. This is due to the fact that the Romanian broadcaster TVR is no longer part of the EBU because of non-payment debts. There has been an official statement of the Eurovision Executive Supervisor Jan Ola Sand which is saying that this fact has the unpopular consequence that Romania will not be able to participate in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest.
With the loss of the EBU membership, the Romanian broadcaster TVR will not only lose its right of participation in the ESC, furthermore there will be no live broadcast possible. This includes also other programs sporting events, legal, technical and research expertise and lobbying services.
It’s more than a pity that an established ESC country is being thrown out of the contest so close to the rehearsal week. It will not only be a big disappointment for the singer Ovidiu Anton who is busily preparing his show, also for the entire Romania, the fans and ESC enthusiasts. For the host broadcaster SVT it will be a big disappointment, too, as the preparations, the organization, the post-card filming have been taken a lot of efforts.
Romania was planned to take part in the Semi Final 2, an event with 19 entries, this will now be reduced to 18, the running order will not be affected. As a courtesy to the singer, the Romanian entry will be presented on the official CD, it’s already in production anyway.
Official withdrawals have happened in the ESC history like 1988, when Cyprus with “Thimame” by Yiannis Dimitrou had to be withdrawn due an old composition, which has been used for several other events. Lately, Georgia 2009 has withdrawn because of the song “We don’t wanna put in”, due to the fact that the ESC was held in Moscow, this could have been seen as approach against Putin.
Let’s hope that everything will be sorted out for 2017 and we will see Romania back in the contest.

About me: As one of the founders of eurovisionlive.com I am responsible for the interviews with the singers and the editorial content. My passion for the Eurovision Song Contest exists since my early childhood. The exotic music, different cultures and languages have given a lot of inspiration to me. Since my very first ESC in Dublin 1994 I particularly appreciate the get together and friendship of all the nationalities and Riverdance was a thrill!
