Who will Germany be sending to Turin? Out of six acts, the Germans will deterimine their representative
Unlike the last two years, Germany is going to have a real national selection again, which is called “Germany 12 Points”. Germany has been struggling with good placings recently, beside of one exception 2018 Michael Schulte with “You let me walk alone”, who made a fantastic 4th place in Lisbon.
This year there have been 944 submitted entries. An expert jury picked the six best acts, from which the German public can determine the German representative for Turin. Due to the fact that radio stations have been involved, both in the expert jury and for the promotion, all songs are extremely radio-friendly. On the other hand songs for the Eurovision Song Contest must convince by first hearing. Looking at the history of the ESC there have been hits before the song has been presented at the ESC e.g. “Save Your Kisses For Me” by the Brotherhood of Man, or vice versa Max Mutzke with “Can’t wait until tonight”, which is still being played by German radio stations.
The radio stations have been involved to promote the six songs to make them popular in Germany. Firstly it was planned to broadcast the national final in the third TV programs only, but now the final will also be shown in the ARD main program at 21.00 CET due to the current situation in Ukraine. The host will be Barbara Schöneberger, who is a well-known TV presenter and hosted this show for the past years for many times.
The votes will come 50% from the involved radio stations, where the listeners had the chance to vote for their favourite already and 50% televoting by the German public.
The Ukrainian winner Jamala (“1944”, Stockholm 2016) who recently had to flee from her home country. This is going to be a very emotional moment to see Jamala on stage. Furthermore Conchita Wurst (“Rise Like A Phoenix”, Copenhagen 2014) and Jane Camerford (Texas Lightening) will be among the guest stars.
These are the six German songs in the running order:
