
This year’s UMK “Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu” which means “new music competition” will be hosted by the former Finnish representative Krista Siegfrids, who made a 24th place in Malmö 2013 and Mikko Silvennoinen. The event will take place in the Mediapolis Television Studio in Tampere.
In the last two years Finland was not very successful at Eurovision. Saara Aalto could reach the Grand Final 2018 in Lisbon, but only made a disappointing 25th place. Last year it was even worse, Darude could not pass the Semi Final and furthermore he became last. These were the results when singers are determined and there are several songs to choose from. That’s why the Finnish broadcaster YLE has changed again the national final like it used to be – six participants with a song each.

According to YLE there have been 426 submission for this year’s UMK, a jury has picked six entries. It has been emphasized that the number of six entries is a matter of quality, instead having 10 entries.
