Big hopes in the Swedish final

The Swedish pre selection with six big shows is the most important TV event in Sweden. With over 3.4 million watchers in the first two shows it has broken a record already. Almost the entire country is watching and talking about the Melodifestivalen. The Swedish Televison SVT set a very high quality level in this show and attracts lots of people abroad. It’s possible to watch the live streams in the internet as well. It’s not only about to find a representative for the Eurovision Song Contest, it’s also a festival among the Swedish TV celebrities, well established singers and newcomers fighting for a spot in the big final in Stockholm on March 10^th. Out of four shows with 8 participants, two acts will qualify directly and two are having the chance in the “Andra Chansen” (2^nd chance), where two more songs will qualify, so there are 10 songs altogether.

On the one hand it can be a chance for well established singers like Charlotte Perelli or Danny Saucedo for another big gig. But it can also be a disaster for singers, who have already been Sweden’s representatives before like Afro Dite, Sweden’s act in 2002 with “Never let it go” which came 8^th in Tallinn. This year it could reach neither the final nor the second chance show. Sometimes it means that all the successes from the past need to be earned again, everybody starts from scratch at zero. Even if somebody has won the contest. Remember 1985, when in Gothenburg’s Scandinavium the Bobbysocks succeeded with “Let it swinge”, but Elisabeth Andreassen (one of the Bobbysocks) came last in the same arena last year!

The quite famous singer Andreas Lundsted also had bad luck this time – only 7^th rank. Even if this year’s song was very modern and had a good choreography, it failed with the TV viewers. He tried so hard to enter the Swedish final as a solo singer as well as with the group Alcazar, which are internationally known for “Crying in the discotheque”, but the Swedes never voted them as representatives.

Sonia Aldén had a big hope to reach the final again. Her ballad “In din himmel” composed by the famous Bobby Ljungren came 6^th and has not even been qualified for the second chance. She has been very disappointed; maybe the only ballad of the night has not been strong enough. The other big hope Timotej, consisting of four young girls qualified for the second chance show. Their first song “Kom” from 2010 had more energy and a more memorable chorus like “Stormande hav”. The other surprise of the night was the retro-rock song “Baby Doll” by the group Top Cats, who gave a stunning performance and reached the second chance show.

On the other hand an absolute newcomer named David Lindgren has convinced the audience and TV viewers by a storm. The strong song “Shout it out” has been composed by Fernando Fuentes Vargas, who came 2^nd with Danny’s song “In the club” last year. Originally this song has been composed for Danny as well, but he denied. Danny will start in the fourth edition in Malmö and is handled as another favourite. David Lindgren is well experienced a musical singer with a very positive attitude. Watching him dancing on stage has been infectious to the audience; a very well choreographed performance with a catchy song might be the perfect combination for a favourite position in the final. From zero to hero could be the best motto for David. If he convinces in the final, he might have also very good chances in Baku.

The other qualifier has been Ulrik Munther with his song “Solider”. His optical likeness to Astrid Lindgren’s “Emil in Lönneberga” was obviously. The originality of the performance was the mouth harp. He was the absolute favourite of the young girls fan base. The other two artists Mimi Oh and Thomas Di Leva had the weakest performances and reached the 8^th and 5^th rank.
