Glamour at the Opening Party

   Sunday, 20 May 2012 00:00

The official opening of the Eurovision Song Contest took place in the Euroclub last night, a huge hall with a large dance floor, restaurant, VIP area and outside terrace. To give this event a little bit more glamour there has been a red carpet on which the delegation could enjoy the flashbulbs of cameras and TV cameras. This tradition exists since 2010, when this has been introduced in Oslo. It has quickly become one of the highlights of the Eurovision weeks, and also gained a huge popularity among the singers and journalists. In fact the carpet has been placed in a last minute action by the organizers, as the first delegation should have arrived at 7pm, but the carpet has been ready at 7.30pm.

All delegations of the 42 participating countries took this opportunity to meet and greet and to do a little show, the French background dancers showed a flic-flac to the enthused crowd. A lot of delegations gave room for short interviews, statements and singing performances. At the beginning the three hosts together with Nikki welcomed all participants on the red carpet personally.

It’s also really nice to watch all the different outfits, some singers came in their ordinary clothes, but others arrived in gala clothes with smoking or evening gown and high heels like Ivi from Cyprus, Greta & Jonsi from Iceland, Rona from Albania, Zeljko Joksimovic from Serbia, Kaliopi from Macedonia, Litesound from Belarus, Gaitana from Ukraine, Nina Zilli from Italy, Anggun from France and Pastora Soler from Spain. Due to the fact that United Kingdom is last from the alphabetical order, Engelbert arrived very late and almost ran over the red carpet and gave no interview at all. Maybe this has been a too stressful situation. On the other hand with his age of 76 he is the most experiences singers and knows how to cope with the media.

There were also other former ESC participants walking on the red carpet like Elena Patroclou from Cyprus “S.O.S.” in Rome 1991 (9th) and Alex Panyai from Cyprus “Sti Fotia” in Dublin 1995 and “Nomiza” in 2000 as well as Linda Martin from Ireland, who won the ESC in 1992 in Malmö with “Why me” who is now supporting Jedward.
There was a huge party in the Euroclub afterwards, several artists used the opportunity to sing live in front of the crowd like Roman Lob from Germany, Rambo Amadeus from Montenegro, Gaitana from Ukraine, Ott Lepland from Estonia and more.
