Introduction
This year Azerbaijan has the honour to host the 57th Eurovision Song Contest in Baku. Due to Azerbaijan’s very short history in the ESC it’s a kind of miracle that a country could win the Eurovision in such a short time of participation, while other old established countries like Portugal or Cyprus never won. But there were other countries like the Ukraine which won in the second year after the debut year, and Latvia after three years.
As the host country it is of highly importance having another good entry to make a second victory possible. The main advantage for the host country is that many countries will also vote for the hospitality and show. There has been a national final arranged be the Azeri broadcaster Ictimai TV, which will also co-host the ESC together with the German production company Brainpool, which was also responsible in Düsseldorf last year. The winning song “When the music dies” sung by Sabina Babayeva is a strong ballad with lots of emotions. For Sabina it’s a kind of national task to represent the host country, when the world is looking at Baku this year. Good luck!
History
This is the 5th time only since Azerbaijan is participating in the Eurovision Song Contest. The debut entry was “Day after Day” by Elnur & Samir in 2008 in Belgrade (8th). From that year on Azerbaijan took part continuously and shapes up very well. The Azerbaijani entries were not that exotic like from the neighbour countries, there were mainly contemporary music styles used. And often composers and producers from other countries have given their input for the success of Azerbaijani entries. Azerbaijan always qualified for the final and was always in the Top 10. These were the most successful songs: “Always” by AySel & Arash in 2009 (3rd), “Drip Drop” by Safura in 2010 (5th) and of course the winning entry from last year “Running scared“ by Ell & Nikki (1st).
