Malta 2011

Malta Participant(s): Glen Vella
Song: One Life
Writer(s): Fleur Balzan
Composer(s): Paul Giordimaina

Glen Vella Malta had its debut in 1971 with a song in the Maltese language “Marija L-maltija “ by Joe Grech (#18), but just after three participations, Malta had no interest anymore. Malta came back in 1991 with a new energy and enthusiasm. From that time Malta always took part and even qualified for the final quite often. In each year the Maltese are very eager to win the contest – the plan is to host the first “Open Air ESC” in history. There is one young lady, who is associated with Malta and the Eurovision Song Contest like no other: Chiara! She has been representing her country three times already: “The one that I love” (#3) in 1998, “Angel” (#2) in 2005 and just recently with “What if” (#22) in 2009. But there were more memorable Maltese entries which are worth to mention: “More than Love” by Moira Stafrace and Christopher Scicluna (#5) in 1994, “Another Summer Night” by Fabrizio Faniello (#9) and “7th Wonder” by Ira Losco (#2) in 2002.

Every year the Malta Song Festival is taken as the national Maltese final to determine the representative for Eurovision. It has always been a huge show with lots of participants, really remarkable for such a small island with 1.4 million inhabitants. This year the Maltese have decided to send Glen Vella with “One Life” to Düsseldorf. It seemed that this song would get the least favorite of the year, judging by other ESC sites and social media, but the producers have changed everything, probably they knew that this song would have been too weak for an international show like the ESC. The song has been taken into a London sound studio and it has been revamped from head to toe. And now this weak song has been transformed into to a happy summer song with much stronger chances for a good position. Adding a modern video clip which shows tolerance and happiness could convince the one or other. Let’s hope that these happy people are going to join Glen on stage in Düsseldorf with an extraordinary show.
