Greece 2011

Greece Participant(s): Loucas Yiorkas feat. Stereo Mike
Song: Watch My Dance
Writer(s): Eleana Vrachali
Composer(s): Giannis Christodoulopoulos

Loucas Yiorkas Greece has joined quite late the Eurovision family in 1974. This year it’s going to be the 32nd Greek entry in the ESC. Since then Greek entries have always been watched with high interest because it was something new for the rest of Europe, Greek entries were melodic and exotic, positively different in a way. This has also been reflected in points and there were quite good positions over the years. After the semi finals and televoting have been introduced, Greece has always been qualifying for the final, thanks to the Greeks who live all over Europe and the little help from Cyprus, where a 12-points vote can always be expected! In 2005 Greece has won the ESC for the first time with “My number one” by Helena Paparizou in Kiev. But the Greeks came at least three times on the 3rd rank: “Die for you” by Antique (also with Helena Paparizou) in 2005, “Shake it” by Sakis Rouvas and “Secret Combination” by Kalomira. Furthermore there were several 5th and 7th and 8th places. Many Greeks songs reflect the Mediterranean lifestyle, summer and holidays, so they are often treated as summer hits in the Mediterranean countries.

There has been a national final in Greece like in former years. There were six singers with very good entries, at the end Loukas Yiorkos feat. Stereo Mike with “Watch my Dance” has been determined, which was a bit of a surprise in consideration of the fact that the favourite “I don’t wanna dance” by Nikki Pontes did not win – this would have been the top favourite in this year’s ESC. Nonetheless the song is an interesting mix of two music styles, hip hop and traditional Greek folk. Probably the important hook is missing by first listening, even if it has something bombastic and dreamy. Hopefully, Stereo Mike relinquishes his dance performance; otherwise it will have the same effect of some Ukrainian entries with a circus on stage. This song can do really well, if sound, light, atmosphere is transported in the right way on stage, the starting position can almost be taken as a “go” for the final.
