Denmark is going to celebrate its 40th participation in the Eurovision Song Contest. Denmark has won the contest two times already: “Dansevise” by Grethe and Jørgen Ingmann (#1) in 1963 and “Fly on the Wings of Love” by The Olsen Brothers (#1) in 2000. The Danish entries have often been happy and melodic songs, which should deflect from the language issue, Danish may sound a bit weird to non-Danish people. To alleviate the language rules in the ESC helped a lot of countries to sing their songs in English. The music industry has a high standard in Denmark and the rest of Scandinavia; there are many good singers and bands who record their music in the sound studios in Copenhagen and Stockholm. So it’s no wonder that the quality of the Danish entries in the national final is relatively high, very contemporary and attractive. The Scandinavians have sense of good trends in music, design and fashion. There were many unforgettable entries from Denmark: “Disco Tango” by Tommy Seebach (#6) in 1979, “Sku' Du Spør Fra No'n” by Hot Eyes (#11) in 1985 and “Never let you go” by Rollo & King (#2) in 2001.
This year the Danish national final took place in Copenhagen. Like in the years before there were many brilliant songs which could all have done well in the ESC. The most outstanding entry was “New Tomorrow” by A Friend in London. It is a Brit Pop song with a fresh and catchy melody and easy to remember. The attractive boy band has captured the audience’s hearts by a storm and so they could also do in the entire Europe during Eurovision. This is one of the big favorites this year and a possible winner. There were rumors of plagiarism of a former Swedish song from 2006 “Sing for me”, a little bit of the melody in “New Tomorrow” reminds of “Sing for me”.
