Cyprus 2011

Christos Mylordos For the 29th time Cyprus is taking part in the Eurovision Song Contest. Cyprus has joined the ESC in 1981, quite late for a Western European country, only Iceland and Andorra joined later. In the history of Cypriot entries, there were only seven Top 10 ranks out of 29 participations, the highest position #5 has been reached three times: “Mono I Agapi” by Anna Vissi (#5) in 1982, “Mana Mou” by Chara and Andreas Konstantinou (#5) in 1997 and “Stronger every minute” by Lisa Andreas (#5) in 2004. Maybe Cyprus is not as successful like Greece, but it has the same eagerness to shape up well and the Cypriots are dreaming of winning and hosting the ESC in beautiful Cyprus one day. There is one singer more often than anybody else for Cyprus: Evridiki, all her three songs have been impressing compositions sung full of heart. The first two songs “Teriazoume” (#11) in 1992 and “Emai anthropos ki ego” (#11) in 1994 had a strong association with the Greek and Cypriot roots, the latest entry “Comme Ci, Comme ça” (#15 in the semi final) was a modern pop tune, which failed in the semi final unfortunately.

This year the Cypriot participant Christos Mylordos has been determined by the TV internally. The song “San Aggelos S’Agepisa” is typical Cypriot song with melodrama and passion, which could have also been sung 20 years ago easily. It’s great to see that some countries do not send modern radio hits. Many people criticized the Eurovision that the countries all singing in English and all sound the same, it cannot be distinguished if a song comes from Russia, Portugal or Slovenia if they would all sing English. Therefore it’s always necessary having some more folkloristic and ethnic entries in the contest to show the variety of music, countries and traditions. Europe can be proud having all these different cultures and that’s make Eurovision so special. This song is a pearl of 2011.
