Gjoko Taneski This year Macedonia is celebrating its 10th anniversary in taking part in the Eurovision Song Contest. In these ten years, the best rank was 11th in 2006 with “Ninanajna” by Elena Risteska. Macedonia has always been in the lucky position that all the Balkan countries are very likely to vote for each other, so Macedonia often qualified for the final, but in the end it never really brought a very good result. The most memorable entries were “Od Nas Zavisi” by Karolina in 2002 (19th) and “Life” by Tose Proseki in 2004 (14th).

The music in Macedonia is probably more similar to the music of the ex-Yugoslav countries than to the Greek music, even if Macedonia is geographically in between. Greece has had a huge development in the music style in the last 15 years and it’s now one of the most successful countries. From the international point of view it might be helpful for Macedonia to develop its own music style in a more modern-folkloristic way as Bosnia-Herzegovina or Serbia does.

This year’s entry “Jas Ja Imam Silata” is general Balkan-style ballad, with some modern elements in it like rap. But this kind of song has been used so many times in the last years e.g. by Montenegro. And it’s almost for sure that this won’t qualify for the final. This song does not stay in your head and has no musical climax, which makes it really difficult to remember. Sorry Macedonia – this won’t reach for the final!
