As one of the founding member France is participating since 1956 in the Eurovision Song Contest. Looking back into history, there were four victories – the last in 1977 with “L’oiseau et l’enfant” by Marie Myriam, thensix times a second place and seven times a third place. The French contributions have been coining the musical choice of songs until the 80’s, the classical “chanson” has often been chosen by France and other countries for the Eurovision. There were big names singers and composers like Serge Lama, Anne-Marie David or Isabelle Aubret over the years. In the 90’s and even in the Millennium years France has presented very extraordinary songs, with exotic singers from all over the world. But all efforts have not brought the victory back to France. Last year France put everything on one card and took Patricia Kaas, who came 7th with a gorgeous chanson “Et S'il Fallait Le Faire”.
How can this be topped this year? Jessy Matador has been determined by the French TV with “Allez Olla Olé”. This is a kind of football-anthem which seems to be quite appropriate as remember - there is the football championship in South Africa on month after the ESC. The song “Allez Olla Olé “ has a very catchy chorus and a disco rhythm which should enliven the audience in the Telenor Arena and in front of the TV’s. As the ESC is mainly a music event for a special interest group which is generally not the same as for football games, this song may be in the wrong contest.
