This year Albania has chosen a real rock song for the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö. There were 17 finalists in the Albanian national selection called “Festivali i Këngës”. The victory of Adrian Lulgjuraj & Bledar Sejko has been a clear match judged by the seven expert juries. The song “Identiet” (Identidy) has no folkoristic arrangement at all. Maybe the aim of the Albanians is to present a different music style to the worldwide audience at the ESC. For the first time, Albania sends a duet to the contest. Bledar has already got some Eurovision experiences, as he has been at the ESC 2011 in Düsseldorf together with Aurela Gaçe as a background singer. He is a popular guitar player and Adrian is a singer from Montenegro. So there might fly some votes from Montenegro to Albania due to this fact.
In the past Albania has always shortened and transformed the songs from original version at the nation festival to an international level for the ESC. So the video clip is showing the original version. It is to be expected that the song will sound a bit differently in Malmö.
Biggest success: 5th place 2012 “Suus” by Rona Nishilu, 1x 7th place
It has been the 50th anniversary of the Festivali i Këngës - the Albanian music festival last year. This event is also taken as national pre selection for the Albanian songs for Eurovision since Albania joined the ESC in 2004 with a respectable 7th rank in Istanbul with “The image of you” by Anjeza Shahini. Last year in Baku, Rona Nishilu could reach an even better 5th place with her stunning ballad “Suus”. So this year it’s the 10th time for Albania in the Eurovision Song Contest. Congratulations!
Albanian music is not that well known across the European continent, therefore the Eurovision Song Contest is a great opportunity to get a worldwide audience. The songs from Albania in the ESC have always preserved the traditional roots with folkloristic elements, even in modern songs there is a traditional part that gives the special Albanian touch.
