For Georgia it’s going to be the 4th participation in the Eurovision Song Contest. Georgia had its debut in 2007 with “My Story” by Sopho which earned a respectable 12th rank in Helsinki. It is quite obvious that newer countries in Eurovision bring a lot of effort in the event, with good quality songs and highly motivated singers. Quite unsuccessful was the Czech Republic, which did not return after three appearances, they did not even qualify for the final once. Of course, if a country never gets enough votes to qualify into the final, the interest is decreasing. All Georgian songs have been from high quality and were outstanding, beside of “My story”, there was “Peace will come” by Diana Gurtskaya (#11) in 2008 and “Shine” by Sopho Nizharadse (#9) in 2010. The 2009 entry “We don’t wanna put in” for Moscow has been disqualified by the EBU, as the song title could have been misunderstood in Russia.
This year Georgia is sending a rock song to Eurovision. Rock songs have always been in the contest over the years, but rarely received higher points, maybe with some exceptions like “In my dreams” by Wig Wam from Norway (#9) in 2005 and some Turkish songs from the recent years. Rock songs from Montenegro and Belarus have never qualified so far. Eldrine is a band who changed out the front singer just after winning the national Georgian final. This year the Georgian rock song won’t be the only one, some of the competitors have also rock songs like Bulgaria, Macedonia, Moldova and Turkey. This is probably the weakest song of Georgia compared to the previous years and in regards of the strong first semi final, there will be a battle to achieve one of the final spots.
