The European summer is almost over, but there is one song which is being played more than others: “If I Were Sorry” by the young and sympathetic Swedish singer Frans. But to achieve a real summer hit it’s quite a challenge, not many Eurovision singers can say to have a summer hit after ESC. And it’s not always the ESC winner. For example “Shake It” by Sakis Rouvas (Greece) was a summer hit like this year’s “If I Were Sorry”. But in certain songs can be a regional summer hit like “Love In Rewind” by Dino Merlin (Bosnia & Herzegovina) or “Cliché Love Song” by Basim (Denmark). And of course there were winning entries like “Everyway That I Can” by Sertab Enerer (Turkey) and “Euphoria” by Loreen (Sweden) which were real summer hits all over Europe.
Looking at this year there were many radio friendly songs, but probably not that striking like last year in Vienna. The national songs were mostly represented in the countries charts for a shorter period and of course the song from the interval act “Can’t Stop The Feeling” by Justin Timberlake, which was made to become a summer hit. This song could have been found in almost all charts in Europe and Australia.
It’s not naturally that Eurovision songs are being successful in the charts afterwards. It depends from year to year and from country to country. In the Scandinavian or the Mediterranean countries, where a great ESC enthusiasm can be noticed in general, the chance to receive a place in the charts is a lot higher.
Even if some song might have the potential of getting a real summer hit like this year’s French song “J’ai Cherché” by Amir, but this only appeared shortly in the charts in Austria (58), Switzerland (59), Denmark (2), France (2), Germany (80), Spain (33) and Sweden (45). It does not reach to become summer hit, even if Amir has been singing in front the Eiffel Tower at the opening of the European Football Championship.
Unfortunately, this year’s ESC winner Jamala could only achieve some weaker chart positions Austria (54), Denmark (57), France (49), Spain (32), Sweden (46) and Switzerland (73) and could not convince as a summer hit, which is clear as it’s far too complex as it was more suitable for the festival than for the radio.
