After the great victory of Jamala for the Ukraine at the 2016 ESC it is now in the hands of the Ukrainian ESC committee to find the perfect host city for the 62nd Eurovision Song Contest next year. There have been many rumours in the internet that the ESC may not be taking place in the Ukraine due to financial problems. Even if there are financial issues, the EBU is also helping countries in all concerns.
The new voting procedure with double amount of the points and a split presentation has urged to more discussions but also more excitement. For all those who love statistics it’s more fun now as there would be different outcomes if just looking at jury results or televote results. Now there is more transparency in regards of jury’s preferences and televote preferences, there are sometimes big differences as well.
For the first time in ESC history the jury results and the televote results have been presented separately. First it was the big show of the jury voting. Here Australia has taken the lead very early and could not have been topped anymore with 320 points, the runner up Ukraine had only 211 points and Belgium was third with 181 points. At that stage nobody could believe that the Ukraine is able to overtake Australia or even Russia.
What a thrilling night! The Ukraine has won the 61st Eurovision Song Contest. Jamala has already been treated as a big favourite when the stage performance has been seen for the first time. Now the Ukraine has even topped all the other favourites by a storm.
Beside of the 26 songs tonight there is a new presentation of the results. First of all 42 jury spokesmen will tune in to give the jury results. There are 42 because there were more countries in the semi-finals which did not qualify but they have the right to vote. Now the spokesmen only name the “12 Points”. The other points from 1-10 will appear on the screen. The Swedish broadcaster SVT had the intention to make it as exciting as possible, the viewing figures during the voting procedure are the highest during the voting procedure.
According to the official bet offices result Russia is #1 right now followed by Australia and Ukraine. The host country Sweden is #5. On the last places on the table are Germany, Czech Republic and Georgia. But this is just an estimation which can be treated as a trend. Especially this year the competition is very tough and it could be any country this year. Maybe we will have surprise winner.
In the beginning of the ESC era in 1956 the music style was contemporary for that time and has changed a lot over the decades. The 70’s brought the pop music into the contest, artists like The New Seekers, France Gall, Cliff Richard or Olivia Newton-John have appeared on the ESC stage. ABBA brought the real pop into the ESC. Later on the ESC music has not always matched with the music which has been played in the radio. There were years with many gimmick songs which can’t be taken seriously. The famous BBC commentator Terry Wogan was beloved for his snappy comments, but he also destroyed the reputation of this contest in the UK and the English speaking countries.
It’s no secret that the Eurovision is particularly popular in the LGBT scene. This might be to the fact that those people are more open when it comes to music from other countries. In some countries homosexuality is still under penalty, even if countries which participate in the ESC such as Russia and countries like Lithuania, Azerbaijan and Poland people need to leave their countries as they fear to receive punishment.
