The national final in Germany was broadcasted last night from Cologne. There were eight participants; one of them was the wildcard, which has been determined through a club concert with ten participants out of 2000 applications. The most popular participants last night were Unheilig and Santiano. Both of them passed the elimination round together with MarieMarie and the wildcard Elaiza. Within three rounds there was a super final between Unheiling and Elaiza. At the end Elaiza made the race with 55% of the televotes.
The show was hosted by the German TV celebrity Barbara Schöneberger and last year’s winner Emmelie de Forest had the honour to open the show with “Only Teardrops”. She also appeared as interval act with her new theme song for Copenhagen “The Rainmaker”. The Italian act “Ma Mia Città” by Emma Marrone was also presented to the public, which received very good applause.
The acoustic quality in the Lanxess Arena was not the best; the bass was too powerful that some acts could not be heard properly. The televoting was not always successful due to a busy line or SMS did not get through. Some of the singers had difficulties with their voices like Das Gezeichnet Ich and Madeline Juno. Both were not able to qualify for the next round. Madeline’s performance was more a mix of Lena and Emmelie de Forest. Soccer-anthem singer Oceana was convincing, but had no chance against the competitors, as well as the Baseballs with music in the 50’s style.
The popular shanty group Santiano have put the arena into a carnival festival with Irish pipes and rhythm on a sailing ship, this would have probably only received points from Ireland if they would have qualified. A bit strange was the option with the second song for the participants who passed the first level. Generally it was a nicely made show with a lot of music and entertainment.
The biggest star was without any doubt "Unheilig". The lead singer Bernd Graf did not change much in his style, his dark voice with a lot of gesture was convincing, both of his songs were not overwhelming enough.
Due to the fact that the wildcard Elaiza has been chosen in the internet by thousands of people, their entry has been nothing new to the public. That was a real advantage. Furthermore the lead singer Ela has Ukrainian and Polish roots and that brought additional sympathy. These three girls are really new to the business and are absolutely unpretentious, very sympathetic though. They will have earned a lot of credits by the audience as people like to submit those who have the hardest task to sing against established singers. The audience in the arena gave standing ovations.
The big question is, if the song has a real chance in Copenhagen, and is this a competitive entry? Maybe the arrangement of the song is a bit too plain; it has no climax or harmonic shift. Furthermore, singing in front of 120 million people will not be an easy task.
