There has been a national final in Belarus. The singer TEO has been chosen as representative with the song “Cheesecake”. TEO is not a new face in the Belorussian TV as he has entered the Eurofest 2009 together with Anna Blagova. TEO, whose real name is Yuriy Vaschuk has been composing several songs for the national final in the last years also for 3+2 and Alyona Lanskaya. Luckily, there was no sudden change of the winner, like in former years.
TEO was born in Hidry (Western Belarus) in 1983. He was involved in music since his early ages in singing, composing, arranging as well as playing the accordion. TEO made a musical career in Belarus after he made a degree in music at the Grodno College of Arts; he was working with the National Academic Concert Orchestra of Belarus. By now Alex has become a familiar TV celebrity and he is co-hosting TV programmes.
The song TEO is going to sing is called “Cheesecake”. This is not the only song with this topic this year, as Latvia’s entry is called “Cake To Bake” but there is no coincidence. The song itself is about the break- up of a relationship where he is tired of being named “My sweet Cheesecake” on a funny way. Of course it will all depend on the stage performance and show TEO is going to prepare for Copenhagen. The song is a mid tempo pop song with no clear climax, it raps and flows along it's a bit boring though. Unfortunately, there is nothing outstanding or special in this song so that it might get difficult to hit the taste of the TV spectators.
Biggest success: 6th place 2007 “Work Your Magic” by Koldun
Belarus participates for the 11th time in the ESC this year. Since 2004 Belarus takes part regularly in the Eurovision Song Contest. For the TV viewers, who only watch the grand final, they will have missed the majority of the Belarusian songs, because only three songs out of nine reached the final. Belarus has won the Junior ESC already, but in the original Eurovision Song Contest, the best place was the 6th with “Work your magic” by Koldun in 2007. The second time Belarus has been voted into the final has been 2010 with “Butterflies” by 3+2 (25th in the final) and last year in Malmö with “Solaya” by Alyona Lanskaya and made a 16th place. The votes mainly come from the former Soviet countries, but this recipe won’t always work to survive the qualification round.
