Today the participating countries of the 59th Eurovision Song Contest have been allocated to the semi finals by a draw, this draw was held during a meeting of the EBU and reference group in Copenhagen. The countries have been drawn at first stage, which Semi Final they are going to be in and secondly if they will start in the first or second half of the show. This allows the delegations and organizers to plan better. The running order has not been decided yet. Due to the fact that there is an unequal number of semi finalist, the first semi final will have 16 and the second semi final will have 15 countries. This will be done by the host broadcaster DR and the reference group to assure a smooth and exciting sequence.
The running order of the Grand Final will also be determined like this. The big 5 countries (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom) plus the host country Denmark are automatically qualified for the Grand Final, so they don’t have to pass the semi finals.
Due an expected massive ticket request from Norway and Sweden, those countries were allowed to be set in each semi final already. Israel uttered the request to start in Semi Final 2 due to the celebrations of the national day.
It has also been drawn, in which Semi Final the big 5 countries plus Denmark will have the right to vote. Germany has requested to vote in Semi Final 2, which has been approved by the reference group. The reason for this was the higher interest in viewing figures in Germany for the second semi final.
Here is the result:
Semi Final 1 – first half: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Estonia, Iceland, Latvia, Russia and Sweden
Semi Final 1 – second half: Belgium, Hungary, Moldova, Montenegro, Portugal, San Marino, The Netherlands and Ukraine
Semi Final 2 – first half: Austria, Georgia, Israel, Lithuania, Malta, Norway and Poland
Semi Final 2 – second half: Belarus, Finland, FYR Macedonia, Greece, Ireland, Romania, Slovenia and Switzerland
