The Eurovision Song Contest plays a major role in Malmö these days. The streets are obviously decorated with Eurovision banners with the motto “We are one” or happy faces with butterfly coloured faces in the colours of the participating countries.
The first rehearsals in the Malmö Arena have already taken place. Unfortunately, the press centre has not opened yet. Instead there are limited facilities in the Slagthuset, the place where the Euroclub is going to happen each night. The first meeting of the singers with the journalists and fans is called “Meet & Greet” and should give the first opportunities to get to know each other, taking photos and doing short interviews. A lot of people complained that the facilities are not perfect yet, there is too much rush for having appropriate interviews and the delegations only spend a limited time in the Euroclub. The purpose of this is to make it smaller in general and that the stage performances cannot be filmed in the first days. It happened several times in the past that unflattering videos have been published on YouTube where the singers did not hit the tones. It is possible to watch the rehearsals in a kind of cinema, where of course filming is not allowed.
It was the first chance to estimate how the stage looks like. Everything is a lot smaller than in previous years, but the stage makes has an impressing and professional look. Sometimes it’s better to have a smaller arena with a good atmosphere than a huge arena which is half filled and a moderate atmosphere.
The very first country to rehearse was Austria, followed by Estonia, Slovenia, Croatia, Denmark, Russia, Ukraine and the Netherlands. In the first camera rehearsals there are many things which are not finalized yet, e.g. the perfect light, and camera positions. There were many bad camera images which should be avoided during the broadcasting. That’s why it’s so important to rehearse as much as possible and there is another intense rehearsal some days later.
