The former Melodifestivalen host Petra Mede has been chosen to be the host of the 58th Eurovision Song Contest in Malmo 2013. This breaking news has been no surprise in Sweden. As Petra is one of the most popular comedians and TV presenter. She hosted the pre selection marathon “Melodifestivalen” 2009 with such ease that everybody believes that she could be the perfect match for the international event.
With a little surprise for the international audience it became clear that she will be the only host, unlike former years with two or even three hosts. In the 80’s and 90’s it was still popular having on host only, to announce the songs with singers, composers, lyricists and conductors before each entry as well as leading through the long voting procedure. Marlene Charelle, host of the ESC 1983 in Munich has even danced the interval act and right after presented the voting in three languages, that was a respectable job.
The Swedish organisation has already announced that this year the entire contest is going back to the roots, it’s even smaller in several aspects, e.g. the arena, a shorter rehearsal week and so on. So maybe every entry will be announce again?
This is the fifth time in the history of the Eurovision Song Contest that Sweden has the honour to host this mega event. In former years the hosts were Karin Falck (Stockholm 1975), Lill Lindfors (Gothenburg 1985), Lydia Cappolicchio and Harald Treutiger (Malmö 1992) and Kattis Åhlström and Anders Lundin (Stockholm 2000).
