The deadline of registering for the 58th has ended. By now 39 countries have confirmed their participation in Malmö. Due to financial issues some countries have decided to withdraw from the ESC for the next year. These are Portugal, Poland, Slovakia and Bosnia & Herzegovina. Poland has been refusing its participation last year already, as Poland was hosting the soccer championship. Portugal has not been very successful in the recent years: 3 of 9 times Portugal reached the Grand Final only. On the other hand Bosnia & Herzegovina has always reached the final and shaped up very well. But if there is no money left it’s a reason.
The biggest surprise is that Turkey has withdrawn as well. Turkey stated a different reason, as there are too many rule changes like the comeback of the juries, which has been relaunched successfully in 2009 and the right to choose the running order by the host broadcaster. This is a bitter pill to the EBU as Turkey has been one of the most successful countries in the past ten years. So this will be a big loss in the ESC. Let’s hope one of the countries will change their mind or at least will come back 2014.
