In the past three years Germany has held it pre-selections in the very up-to-date casting-styled method. The German broadcaster ARD has worked together the private TV Pro7 very successfully, which brought one international victory (Lena “Satellite”) one 10th and one 8th rank. It has been announced earlier that this concept need to receive a make-over as the format of casting shows has lost the TV viewers interest. The collaboration between ARD and Pro7 does not exist any further. The producing company Brainpool which has also produced the ESC in Baku will still be involved.
In the German pre-selection 2013 there will be only one show with eight to twelve participants. Mr. Schreiber (ARD head of entertainment and EBU reference group) has given an outlook to the future. The aim is to establish a contemporary show like the Swedish pre-selection called “Melodifestivalen” which consist of several events in different cities. This method works very well in particular the songs are very well represented in the Swedish charts as well. The general enthusiasm in Sweden is generally very high and the Melodifestivalen is extremely popular and has been copied by Norway. The big question is if such a format would also work for Germany?
The German participants will be determined by ARD, so there will be televoting, a jury and additionally radio station will be involved to announce the local favorites. The choice of participants should be a mix of established singers and newcomers. Let’s hope that there will be also well known artist like Frida Gold, Silbermond, etc. to assure good quality and high appreciation nationally and internationally.
The German pre-selection will take place on February 14, 2013, hosted in the TUI Arena in Hanover with a capacity of 11.000 seats.
