In the meanwhile the preparations for the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest next year in Malmö, Sweden are in full swing. Some countries like Switzerland and Lithuania have started their selection process already! The Swedish organisers have also announced some changes which will reflect in the 58th edition. There will be one presenter only, hosting the event. In early years it was the rule to have one presenter only, but in the 1988 ESC in Dublin there have been two hosts (Michelle Rocca and Pat Kenny) for the first time and in 1999 even three hosts! Due to the increasing number of participating countries the individual song has not been announced anymore by the host, the gala style has gone with it. In 2013 there will be one host again, if the individual contribution will be announces like in former years is still open.
The more striking rule change is that the organising TV station has the right to determine the running order of the semi finals and the grand final! This means that the old rule of equal chances for getting a good starting position will be determined by the organisers judged by preferences and dramaturgy. The idea behind this is to avoid four ballads starting after each other. The host country’s positions will be drawn. This will certainly make some countries unhappy, who will be glad determined as song number one or two? This will cause a lot of discussions later on as it’s officially accepted by the EBU. We will see if this is a success or not.
