In the most viewed music show of the world there are not only the participating songs, it’s also a great opportunity for the host country to show the national music with local or international artists to a worldwide audience in the opening and interval act. Between the song presentation and the voting procedure which can last from 5 to 10 minutes there is a kind of gap which needs to be filled – so called “Interval Act”. In former years the host broadcasters have created shows from circus to films, more or less impressive. But there were also some unforgettable moments with outstanding dance performances, medleys from national superstars like Aqua (Denmark), Boyzone (Ireland), Jan Delay (Germany) and show acts like The Wombles in 1974 (UK), Riverdance in 1994 (Ireland), Cirque du Soleil in 2009 (Russia) and Madcon with “Glow” in 2010 (Norway).
Often we can see a mix of traditional music of the host country with new elements of contemporary music. This is also what we can expect this year by the Azeri TV. The traditional music in Azerbaijan is called Mugham, which is a special kind of music with mystic singing and oriental instruments – very extraordinary though, not really made of Western European ears. This music is so special that the UNESCO has protected this music as Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. We will also see the popular singer Emim and Alim Gasimov, Natiq rhythm band and the Azerbaijan National Dance Ensemble.
Furthermore formerly ESC winner Dima Bilan from Russia has been invited by the Azerbaijani organizers to perform in the Semi Final 2 together in a duet with Nigar, last year’s winners (from Ell & Nikki).
