Now it’s time for each nation to choose the right participant for the 55th Eurovision Song Contest in Oslo. By now three countries have selected the performer and song: Albania, Switzerland and Finland. Other countries are in busy preparations with their selections. Some countries do not have a public selection, but an internal jury which determines the artist and entry like Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia & Herzegovina, France, Israel, Switzerland, Turkey and Ukraine. All songs must be determined until March 15th.
The upcoming weekend will reveal more songs; there are national finals in Denmark, Norway, Iceland, Cyprus and the Netherlands. You can watch these finals on the national TV websites e.g. www.nrk.no Furthermore, the Swedish Melodifestivalen will have it’s first show of the year. The selection procedure varies from country to country.
Many people have been disappointed that Germany made an internal selection last year. But this year Germany has started a new show format – a casting show with 20 participants called “Unser Star für Oslo”, after 8 qualifying rounds 8 there will be a new face for representing Germany in Oslo. For the first time the German host broadcaster ARD is collaborating with the private channel Pro7, the aim is to gain a younger viewer generation, without nostalgia. Pro7 has made huge media ads as well in television as in the internet, which has never been before in history. It’s good to see that Germany hasn’t lost interest in the ESC.
