After shaping up so badly in recent years, Germany has decided to make a relaunch in the selection of the song for the Eurovision Song Contest. Similar to other countries with several preliminary rounds, Germany has determined 20 singers out of more than 4000 aspirants in a casting show with 8 shows. This is probably the longest decision for a German entry in history. The private channel Pro7 has been collaborating with the NDR (official TV station for organizing and broadcasting the ESC). The major role of the show “Unser Star für Oslo” (Our star for Oslo) has been Stefan Raab, who had quite good experiences in the ESC, twice as a successful composer in 1998 “Guildo hat euch lieb” and 2004 “Can’t wait until tonight” and once as singer in 2000 “Wadde hadde dude da”. There has been an expert jury, consisting of top-class singer Xavier Naidoo and Stefanie Kloß from the famous German band Silbermond, who judged the singers and songs. There has been a lot of promotion of this show, in radio stations, TV, newspapers, posters, etc. The aim of gaining younger people attracted to the ESC has been a success. The whole country has talked about the show.
The final show last Friday has been a battle between Lena Meyer-Landrut and Jennifer Braun, two very young ladies with huge potential and great voices. In the first seven shows the singers had to proof their singing qualities. The well kept secret of the song for Germany has been revealed, there were four songs altogether, the first two songs had to be sung by both of them, the third and fourth song has been an individual choice of the singer.
The majority of the televoters wanted the highly favored Lena to win with the song “Satellite”, a very contemporary composition written by the Dane Josh Gordon and the American Julie Frost. This song has also been sung by Jennifer, but in a slower version. Lena’s fast version is more suitable for her voice and stage appearance. Lena is a lovely young girl, full of energy and freshness and convinced the whole country with her natural and positive charisma. Her style of singing is unique and unusual. That’s why there have been many discussions about her. Should this girl represent Germany at Eurovision? The audience in the auditorium in Cologne has been delighted and was obviously satisfied with the choice. Nevertheless, Germany had chosen its representative, compared to last year, it was not even possible, the song has been determined by the NDR.
