By the deadline of 15th of March, all songs of the participating countries must be determined. There has been a huge marathon in all the countries to find the right representatives. Every country has its own method, internal juries, casting shows and big selections like the Swedish Melodifestivalen. The general trend of opinions of this year’s contest in several internet forums is quite disappointing: there are too many ballads and weak songs. Of course, there have always been strong years like 2009 and weak years like 1984, where there are only a few outstanding songs. Last year there were many good and high quality songs; it was almost clear from the beginning that Norway is the clear favorite. This year it’s nearly unpredictable as there are not that many outstanding songs. But that makes it even more exciting.
In recent years, many people have complained that there are too many gimmick songs, this year the general standard is quite low. Probably no country is eager to win, due to the financial crisis. Nowadays it’s a very expensive experience hosting the contest, renting a stadium for several weeks. The event has grown dramatically. On the one hand it’s very positive that this old contest is more popular than ever and belongs to the biggest music event of the year worldwide, but on the other hand it has lost its original charm with orchestra and conductor, foreign languages and a fine dressed audience in a gala show. These times are gone; it’s a modern pop festival now which should entertain more than 100 million people all around the world with a special Eurovision party mood.
But it’s also necessary to take one point into consideration, the quality of the music videos differs from website to website, from now on, music videos are now produced and the songs will be remastered and refined. The music CD will be of high quality, the stage in Oslo will be very attractive with the latest technology and the performers are now working on their stage performances and choreographies. So nothing is decided yet and it’s better not expecting too much in the beginning then the surprises will come.
