In the last two years Finland was not very successful at Eurovision. Saara Aalto could reach the Grand Final 2018 in Lisbon, but only made a disappointing 25th place. Last year it was even worse, Darude could not pass the Semi Final and furthermore he became last. These were the results when singers are determined and there are several songs to choose from. That’s why the Finnish broadcaster YLE has changed again the national final like it used to be – six participants with a song each.
This year’s UMK “Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu” which means “new music competition” will be hosted by the former Finnish representative Krista Siegfrids, who made a 24th place in Malmö 2013 and Mikko Silvennoinen. The event will take place in the Mediapolis Television Studio in Tampere.
According to YLE there have been 426 submission for this year’s UMK, a jury has picked six entries. It has been emphasized that the number of six entries is a matter of quality, instead having 10 entries.

About me: Due to the fact that my parents are musicians, I have a gained a great enthusiasm for music. Since 1979 my interest in the Eurovision Song Contest has grown enormously. My first ESC I joined was in Dublin 1995. Six years later I founded the website eurovisionlive.com in the year 2001. The most fascinating part for me is the original idea of the Eurovision Song Contest – the peaceful contest of the European countries. I am very happy that I have the chance to contribute my little part for the greatest music show in the world.
