It’s very interesting to follow the rehearsals in Kiev. Some entries really surprise in a positive way, compared to the video clips, and others really fail. It has always been like this and it brings even more room for speculations. Have some countries been underrated or overrated? Does the stage performance and live singing qualities shine over everything else what has been seen by the singers so far? Let’s take a look on today’s rehearsals, which were Greece, Poland, Moldova, Iceland, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Armenia, Slovenia and Latvia.
The rehearsal of the Greek singer Demi looked quite professional. There is an expandable plate which lifts her up and two half naked background dancers support her disco song, while Demy is hardly moving. The beautiful singer will definitely be an eye-catcher here in Kiev.
There is a quite plain stage, Kasia is wearing an elegant ivory coloured dress and it all looked and sounded good. A violinist will add a certain music approach to the performance. According to the serious lyrics, the overall appearance seem to be friendlier.
It was expected that Sunstroke Project did not change the choreography, as it has been refined to the best already. Everything looks perfect and the nice dance step and the sax interlude makes everything to work well. The LED background is a bit exhausting for the eyes, as the group members get mirrored in a huge way. A bit irritating are the big “Mama” letters in the background as well as the strangely dressed backing singers.
The team of Svala has chosen some laser illumination and a drifting cape with a wind machine. This stage show seem to offer a lot for the viewer, but nothing really happens. Overall this performance did not convince at all.
There were high expectations of the Czech entry this year. Martina’s voice was still strong and powerful, but the stage performance had some strange surprises. The LED background only showed the images of her video-clip. Let’s hope that she is going to wear something more elegant than the old-fashioned cosmonaut suit for the live show. Wrong outfits can cost a lot of points.
The rehearsal of Hovig looked well prepared, the background looked a little bit like last year’s Russian entry “You Are The Only One” with the white cubes. At the end of his performance he is laying on the floor like in space. Everything needs to be rehearsed a bit more to guarantee an implicitly flow.
This is a very extraordinary composition. Therefore it’s important to transfer this on stage in the right way. The LED background looks different and joyful, the two backing singers support Artsvik with energy and uncommon movements. The first impression of Artsvik is a bit super cooled and sternly, which will be underlined by her dark outfit.
For Omar Naber it’s the second time to be at Eurovision here in Kiev. This time he will be performing a power ballad. There have been slight changes in the arrangement of the song, to make it more bombastic. The stage illumination gives the feeling of an even bigger stage thanks to the technique and at the end all the spots are concentrated on the singer. Omar sang very well, beside of one wrong note.
There is a big potpourri of all different colours on stage. So it’s hard to recognize something, in particular the singer Agnese. She was wearing trousers like going fishing, and it all looked very 80’s. There is not much of a difference of this stage performance compared to the Latvian national final.
