Not many people are aware what to eat in Ukraine. Beside of the common roots with its neighbouring countries with the preferences of beetroot soup, potatoes, bread and sour cream, cakes and patisserie Ukraine is proud on having its own and individual traditions and recipes. The Ukrainian cuisine has always been known as one of the best and various in the former Soviet republics and has also many influences from the Russian, Turkish, Polish and Hungarian cuisines. It’s known for its quality, the ingredients and the way of preparation. The Ukrainians love their honey, nuts, berries, citrus fruits, dried fruits, desserts and spicy food with meat.
Of course you can find the most popular dish “Chicken Kiev” – a filled chicken filet with crumbles, mushroom dishes like “Solenje Gribnoje Po-Odesski”, pickled mushrooms in salads, or the “Ukrainian Borschtsch” (beet root soup – there are many varieties) or “Soljanka”. There also some very delicious dumpling varieties such as the filled dumpling “Kartofelnye vareniki”, egg and cabbage varieties. Very recommendable are the freshwater fish specialities like carp “Nemanskij karp w kvasse” or “Juschka”.
Popular drinks are of course local sorts of vodka, beer and wine as well as tea and coffee. Also interesting to try the milk drinks such as kefir and rjaschenka. The capital of Kiev is also offering a great variety of international restaurants, but it’s worth to try the local cuisine to widen your senses. Enjoy!
