Today it has been the first time with an official announcement been made by the Ukrainian broadcaster UA PBS represented by Victoria Romanova – Executive Producer ESC 2017, the EBU with Jan Ola Sand – Executive Supervisor ESC and the city of Kiev. The occasion has become somehow traditional over the past years, the official representatives have met to welcome everybody to Kiev for the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 and to start the countdown to May.
The host city insignia has been one of the formal acts to handover the key from Stockholm to Kiev. President of the City council Stockholm Eva-Louise Erlandsson Slorach lauded the success of the ESC in Stockholm and the great chances to shine in Europe and even beyond for a host city. Kiev’s city mayor Vitaliy Klitschko also hold a speech and he underlined the importance of this big event being held in Kiev this year.
Furthermore there were nice video clips one was showing Jamala’s way of success in Stockholm last year and the other one was about Kiev as a host city. It was emphasised that there have been many changes from 2005 to nowadays, when Kiev was the host city already. Both Jamala and Ruslana (winner of 2004 with “Wild Dances”) were holding short speeches and allocated the Big 5 countries plus host country Ukraine to the Semi Finals for the broadcasting and voting:
Semi Final 1
Semi Final 2
The allocation draw itself has been quite unspectacular and straight forward. The countries have been put into six different pots which have been determined by the voting patterns of previous years. Then they have been allocated in which of the two Semi Finals on May 9th and May 11th they are going to start and in which half of each Semi Final as well. Switzerland has had a special allowance to start in Semi Final 2, as there is the ice hockey world championship on the day of the first Semi Final. And Germany had the allowance to live broadcast the Semi Final 2 as the German broadcaster expects the higher viewing figures on a Thursday.
This is the result of the Semi Final allocation draw in alphabetical order:
Semi Final 1 – first half:
Semi Final 1 – second half:
Semi Final 2 – first half:
Semi Final 2- second half:

About me: As one of the founders of eurovisionlive.com I am responsible for the interviews with the singers and the editorial content. My passion for the Eurovision Song Contest exists since my early childhood. The exotic music, different cultures and languages have given a lot of inspiration to me. Since my very first ESC in Dublin 1994 I particularly appreciate the get together and friendship of all the nationalities and Riverdance was a thrill!
