On January 31st, Kiev will be in the spot of attention when it comes to the allocation draw for the semi finals. At 11:00 CET there will be a live broadcast on the official Eurovision channel and on YouTube so that everybody can follow the draw from the Column Hall. 37 countries in the semi finals will be allocated in two semi finals. This procedure is the same than in previous years. This allows the delegations to fix their plans in regards of travel, schedules, etc.
In this ceremony there will be the traditional key handover of the past mayor in Stockholm to the new mayor of Kiev called “host insignia”, in Kiev this will be Vitaliy Klitschko.
Normally, at this point the official theme of the contest, the logo and the host should be known, as there were introductory films in the past.
There will be six pots with countries, based on historical voting patterns to avoid that countries will end up in the same semi final to support each other with “neighbourhood voting”. The countries will be picked pot by pot to allow all countries equal chances.
These pots are:
Pot 1: Albania, FYR Macedonia, Montenegro, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia and Switzerland
Pot 2: Denmark, Finland, Norway, Iceland, Estonia and Sweden
Pot 3: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Russia and Israel
Pot 4: Hungary, Cyprus, Greece, Romania, Moldova and Bulgaria
Pot 5: Portugal, Australia, Czech Republic, Malta, Austria and San Marino
Pot 6: Belgium, Netherlands, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland
