Sweden is one of the most successful countries in the Eurovision Song Contest: ABBA, The Herrey’s, Carola and Charlotte Nilsson (Perelli) brought great respect to the country of the midnight sun. Swedish pop music has become very popular around the world and a lot of music is being produced in Sweden. Due to the great popularity of the Eurovision, the “Swedish Schlager” has become a major music genre in Sweden and will be celebrated in many festivals. Former participants of the Melodifestivalen (the Swedish pre-decision) do celebrate their entries and furthermore this music is played by all major radio stations.
The Melodifestivalen has become a mega event in Sweden in the previous years and the whole country is following the six live shows with great enthusiasm.
The big surprise this year was that the favorites did not make it like Mans Zelmerlöw, Sarah Dawn Finer, EMD, Alcazar or the BWO. Sweden has decided to send Malena Ernman to Moscow. She is an opera singer with a mezzo soprano voice, has her own style and is internationally known in the European opera scene. The song “La voix” is a mix of opera and pop. Unfortunately, this is nothing new at Eurovision, as Slovenia recently tried it this way with Alenka Gotar and “Cvet Z Juga” and came 15th in the Helsinki Final in 2007.
“La voix” is a quite melodic and powerful song, but with a lack of the essential “Swedish note”. The choreography and the masks of the background singers and dancers will bring a bit carnival of Venice to Eurovision. Compared to other Swedish entries – even from this year’s Melodifestivalen - this one is disappointing and simple boring. Not the best choice from Sweden this year!
